What Is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is the medical term used to describe the curve in the spine when viewed from the side. It can therefore be said that everyone has kyphosis, even those with a normal kyphotic curve.

The spine of a person with “good” or upright posture has natural gentle inward curves in the area of the neck (cervical) and also in the lower back (lumbar) region. Between these two areas the upper back would have a slight outward curve. These normal curves in the spine, combined with its flexibility, have evolved to support our upright stance and balance and also allow a shock absorbing effect to reduce the possibility of injury.

So, what is kyphosis? By this I mean when the term “kyphosis” is also used as medically to describe the condition where the natural curves have increased to beyond the normal range.

Kyphosis is a deformity of the spinal column with excessive curvature in the upper back, giving the appearance of slouching, or in more severe cases, hunch back. The point at which the kyphosis is deemed to be abnormal (or hyperkyphosis) is ill-defined, but is usually somewhere between 40 to 50 degrees of curve in the upper back.

The symptoms of kyphosis can include mild to moderate back pain and aching or sensitive areas in the muscles of the upper back and neck.

In more severe cases, the increased curvature of the spine restricts and alters the chest cavity, displacing organs and compressing the lungs leading to shortness of breath.

As it progresses, it changes the way your spine works, and it can be very painful.

Pressure on the spinal nerves can cause severe and chronic pain or numbness from the hip downwards, and possible incontinence.

The answer to what is kyphosis must be taken further.

There are basically two types of abnormal kyphosis:

Structural

Postural

Structural kyphosis is caused by an actual defect in part of the spine. There are several different specific forms:

Congenital kyphosis

Here, the spinal column does not develop properly right from the start. Some vertebrae may not form correctly, or be fused together. Either of these abnormal situations may mean the kyphosis will become more severe as the child grows. Gibbous deformity is congenital and affects the lower spine. Surgical treatment may be needed at a very young age, and can help maintain a more normal spinal curve.

Scheuermann’s kyphosis

This condition was first described by a Danish radiologist.

The cause of Scheuermann’s kyphosis is unknown but often shows up in adolescence. Scheuermann’s kyphosis usually affects the upper spine, but can also occur in the lower back area and happens because the front sections of the vertebrae grow more slowly than the back sections. This results in irregular and wedge-shaped vertebrae. If there is pain, it usually occurs at the peak of the curvature. Periods of sitting or standing can affect the level of pain as well as some forms of activity. Exercise therapy can help ease the discomfort.

Medical disorders

Poliomyelitis and rickets contracted in childhood can also cause structural kyphosis, as can other skeletal conditions such as:

Osteoporosis Osteoporosis affects disc space and bone density, resulting in a pronounced hunch. It is progressive, and is difficult to treat. Improvement of the condition is unlikely.

Arthritis

Paget’s disease

Tuberculosis

Postural kyphosis is related to poor posture. Bad posture, particularly habitual slouching causes postural kyphosis. This type is most noticeable during adolescence.

(At this point, in defining “what is kyphosis”, I need to say that medical opinion is divided on which types of kyphosis is most prevalent in boys or girls. You will see completely opposite statements on this in medical literature, or quasi-medical articles)

Postural Kyphosis often shows during adolescence, and is the most common form of kyphosis.

It is indicated by an increase of the normal curve of the spine, but with the natural flexibility of the spine maintained. It does not often cause pain. Postural kyphosis does not often lead to problems in later life.

Postural kyphosis can usually reduced in severity or even prevented altogether. When the symptoms of kyphosis first appear in the young, it is possible, and advisable, to take appropriate action. Exercise to strengthen the back and stretch the chest and hamstrings can help to correct postural kyphosis.

When you have kyphosis, it can be very devastating both for comfort and appearance. In many cases, kyphosis is caused by poor posture or trauma. In these cases, you can generally correct the condition and relieve back pain by doing exercises for kyphosis.

When your kyphosis is caused by postural problems, exercises for kyphosis can have a profound impact. The goal of these exercises is to stretch tight areas such as the chest and hamstrings. You are also going to be strengthening the upper back and your abdominals.

Some treatment exercises:

One exercise you can do will stretch the tight chest or pectoral muscles. Lie down on your back with your knees bent and your hands behind your head, as if you were getting ready to do a sit up. Keeping your shoulder blades and ribs to the floor, press your elbows down to the floor, stretching the chest muscles, and release, repeating five to eight times.

Another of the exercises for kyphosis you can do is a hamstring stretch. To do this you lie on your back with a rope or band wrapped around one foot. The other leg should be flat on the floor. Apply tension to the strap and lift your leg slowly from the floor, feeling the pull of the hamstring. Hold for two or three seconds before releasing, and do six to eight repetitions per leg.

You can also do deep breathing exercises for kyphosis, which will help you stand or sit up taller while stretching the back and relieving pain. You may notice that with deep breathing you can also move more freely. Range of motion during deep breathing can really help neck and back pain.

Another type of exercises for kyphosis that you can do is upper back exercises. These exercises focus on stretching and building strength in the upper back, shoulders, and neck. With these exercises, you could work toward correcting the injury or posture issues that caused your kyphosis in the first place.

There are several upper back exercises that you can try. One is called a lateral row, and in this exercise you sit on the floor with your legs extended and back straight, with an exercise band wrapped around both feet. Pull your hands to your waist slowly, hold for a few seconds, and release.

Another of the upper back exercises for kyphosis that you can do is called wall washes. In this exercise you stand with your legs hip width apart, with your spine and pelvis against a wall. Walk your feet out away from the wall about one foot and bend the knees slightly. Put your hands and elbows flat against the wall and raise your elbows until they are just above your shoulders, then come back down just as slowly.

The final exercise you can try for upper back strengthening is the elbow lift. In this exercise you lay down on your stomach on the floor. Put your hands outside of your shoulders palm down. Raise your abs and ribs up off the floor without moving your legs. Raise your elbows higher to stretch the back and build strength.

Pilates are a great form of exercises for kyphosis as well, because they emphasis great posture, stretch the body, and build up back muscles. You will also be working the core abdominal muscles and the legs with these exercises. These exercises will correct imbalances in the spine, alleviating pain and strengthening your body.

In chapter 5 of “Kyphosis and How to Treat It” we outline the ten most effective exercises for assisting with kyphosis recovery. We highly suggest that you make these exercises part of your regular routine.

Cervical kyphosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine in the neck. Instead of the spine forming a slight inward curve at the cervical spine, the curve is exaggerated looking more like a “C.” This condition can be mild or severe, and can be caused by many different things.

There are many causes of cervical kyphosis. The condition can be the result of a surgery, such as laminectomy surgery. It can also be caused by degenerative disc disease or trauma to the spine. It can also be a congenital defect that you have from birth.

The symptoms of cervical kyphosis vary greatly. There may be minor changes in the shape of your spine or it can be a major deformity. Chronic pain is the most common symptom. You may also notice changes in your posture, range of motion in the neck, or strength in the neck.

If kyphosis becomes severe, it can lead to further symptoms such as weakness in the arms or legs, loss of grip strength, or difficulty walking. This is due to pressure in the spinal cord. Neurological problems can also occur due to spinal cord pressure. Paralysis from the neck down can even result if the condition is severe and untreated.

An x-ray or an MRI will be performed on your neck to determine the cause of your chronic pain. You should visit your doctor and make sure they perform these tests if you feel you may have this condition. This is the most common way that cervical kyphosis is discovered and diagnosed. Once diagnosed, treatment can begin in earnest.

In extreme cases where pressure is being placed on the spinal cord, your doctor may recommend surgery as a treatment for cervical kyphosis. Surgery is generally recommended when there is pressure on the spinal cord, extreme pain or extreme deformity. The surgery is not taken lightly.

This surgery involves spinal fusion, as well as segmental instrumentation. This means that some type of metal is used to align the spine and hold it in place. This will keep the cervical kyphosis from returning.

However, in most cases where the condition is only affecting pain levels and appearance, other measures can be taken. Pain medications can be prescribed to manage chronic pain, and a neck brace can be worn for a time to attempt to straighten the spine back to its original position.

Another form of treatment is physical therapy. This is likely going to be required whether you are wearing a neck brace to relieve pain and appearance or if you are having surgery. After the surgery is over and the neck brace is removed, you will have to undergo a certain amount of physical therapy.

Physical therapy will help you in many ways. You will learn to correct your posture and body movements so that your kyphosis is not affected as greatly. You will also learn ways to minimize and deal with your condition, as well as gain the maximum amount of strength and range of motion in your neck.

Cervical kyphosis is one form of kyphosis. Other types are described in chapter 1 of the ebook “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”

If you’ve got kyphosis, but may be afraid that you need surgery, this article will help clear some myths about getting treatment for kyphosis. The fact is that most forms of postural kyphosis can be easily corrected with simple exercises. It can also be corrected with stretching and making a conscious effort on a regular basis to have good posture.

What Is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is often a very confusing term, since it describes the curvature of the spine. Healthy spines have some kyphosis naturally. The thoracic spine or the middle back area is normally supposed to have an outwards curve. The problem is when there is too much of this curvature.

Exaggerated curvature of the spine is known as abnormal kyphosis, problematic kyphosis, or hyper kyphosis. In addition, the lumber spine and cervical spine can both develop a curve. This is not considered healthy or normal.

The fact is that your lumber spine and cervical spine are supposed to have an inward curvature. This is also known as lordotic curvature. There are two basic kinds of problematic kyphosis. The first is known as structural kyphosis. This is a congenital defect of the spine. This may be known as Scheuermann’s kyphosis.

This problem is seen in adolescents. It is seen when the front areas of the vertebrae do not grow in the same speed as the back areas. This creates a wedge in the vertebral column.

The other type is known as postural kyphosis. This is a slouching posture that has caused the spine to become curved more than it should. So let’s look at the various options for treatment for kyphosis.

What Kinds Of Treatment For Kyphosis Is Available?

Physical therapy is one great treatment option. Physical therapy can help you learn about good posture and understand how to implement it on a daily basis. In physical therapy, you will learn certain exercises that help you to add strength to the muscles of the spine.

Bad posture can end up developing into abnormal kyphosis of the spine. It is usually possible to correct this with just simple exercises on your part. A physical therapy program will show you not just how to have good posture, but will also teach you how to physically feel what proper posture feels like. This is important, because you don’t want to have to think about it all day.

You can also work on simple stretching exercises. You can simply get a Swiss ball, one of those huge, oversized plastic balls that you see at the gym. You lay on top of one them on your back. Then you gradually and slowly stretch over the ball, while keeping your feet firmly planted on the floor as you do this.

Another treatment for kyphosis is wearing a back brace. Wearing braces can help alleviate or manage the pain. It can also retard the progression of the curvature. Braces can also help to avoid invasive surgery procedures. Braces can help to keep your shoulders back, chin up, thereby taking the pressure off the spine. Treatment for kyphosis in most cases is simple and effective.

More good information about treatments for kyphosis is available in chapter 4 of the ebook “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”.

There are many various types of back braces for kyphosis conditions. Some of them don’t really work, while others have been proven to work really great. It may be a challenge to find the right kind of back braces for your condition. But before we talk about braces, let’s briefly talk about what kyphosis actually is.

What Kyphosis Really Is

The medical term for the rounding of the upper back in a forward contour is known as kyphosis. This is also known as hunchback. The rounding is a lot more pronounced than what is normal. It can often be much more than forty-five degrees.

This condition can occur at any age. It is important that children get treatment as early as possible, since their spine is still growing and developing. Although it can be seen in children, kyphosis can occur at any age. That’s why it is important to have back braces to help treat this problem.

Mild cases usually don’t cause any major problems. More severe cases can be very serious and even need surgical intervention. The problem can be identified by doing a bend test at the physicians’ office. The patent bends forward from the waist area.

During this time the doctor will evaluate the upper back and look for signs of curvature. He may even require an x-ray to see just how severe the curvature may be. He will also look for any deformity within the vertebral column. In adults, arthritis is often linked to kyphosis deformities.

If you find it hard to breathe, because of the kyphosis, the doctor may also order that pulmonary tests be done as well. Kyphosis in both children and adults can cause problems with self-esteem and their self-image. In some instances, the hump in the back can be so obvious that other people notice.

Back pain may also accompany the condition, which can make life very difficult. Some of the treatment options include exercises to add strength to the back and spine muscles. In addition, pain medication can be prescribed if there is severe pain.

One of the options is to use back braces. One of the most common back braces is known as the Boston model. This brace opens in the back and is an underarm low profile unit. There are also the Milwaukee back braces available for round back or high thoracic kyphosis.

These braces are made out of high quality plastic that is light and customized to fit the body. Pads add pressure on the curvature. This gives it superior correction in posture. You wear the brace under your normal clothes. It may require that you purchase clothes a few sizes larger to accommodate the brace underneath.

Back braces are usually worn by children and not adults. Children will wear the braces until they stop growing at around age 17 or 18. The growth will be monitored by the doctor on a regular basis. It’s recommended that the back braces will be worn at least twenty hours a day.

More treatment options for kyphosis are detailed in the ebook: “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”.

The hunchback posture or postural kyphosis can be a very troublesome condition. Slouching can cause the spine to stay in the position. The key is to sit up straight. Rounding the shoulders can create pain, fatigue and kyphosis.

Hunchback posture is very easy to correct. It takes a little effort to learn and understand how to have good posture. Then, it’s all about making the daily effort to keep a good posture. Physical therapy can help you with this as well.

You’ll learn how to do certain exercises that help you add strength to the muscles in your back. This makes it a lot easier to have proper posture. There are several ways to have good posture:

Keep your lower back arched slightly. Don’t keep it too arched. If you think of rolling your pelvis inward, then the lower back portion will be in the right position.

The feet should be shoulder width apart. You want to make sure you distribute your weight on an even basis to prevent hunchback posture. Do not put all of your weight on one foot.

Keep the chin upwards. You want to look straight ahead.

Shoulders should be back. Think about lifting up your breast bone area. This will cause your shoulders to fall backwards in a natural way.

You are not going to be able to correct the hunchback posture overnight. It will take some effort on your part before you are going to automatically sit and stand correctly. It is well worth the effort and time you put into it.

Your spine is not meant to carry extra loads of weight that you may be putting on it with incorrect posture. There are some treatment options available, though. This includes physical therapy.

Physical Therapy for Hunchback Syndrome or Postural Kyphosis

Physical therapy is a very crucial and important option of treatment for postural kyphosis. Physical therapy can help you learn not only what good posture is, but also what correct posture will feel like to you on a physical level. You can be trained to consciously improve your posture.

In addition, physical therapy can assist you in adding more strength to the muscles of the spine. These are call paravertebral muscles. These support your spine and can sometimes weaken. In hunchback cases, these muscles are often not doing their job correctly.

Physical therapy can teach you how to stretch specific muscles, like the spinal muscles. This can also help to alleviate pain that you may be suffering at this time, due to severe kyphosis.

It Won’t Happen Overnight

As has already been said before, it takes a considerable amount of effort and time to reverse the postural kyphosis. Depending on how severe your particular case, it may take anywhere from six months to two years to totally reverse your condition. This requires daily exercises to strengthen muscles of the back and spine.

It also requires stretching and a conscious effort, all day to keep good posture. This looks a lot easier as you’re reading this. The real challenge is in actually implementing it on a daily basis. We are creatures of habit. Habits tend to be natural and effortless. Therefore, it is a wise choice to make correct posture a daily habit, so that you can reverse the effects of hunchback kyphosis.

Other treatment optins for kyphosis are described in the ebook: “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”.

Do you want to know how to improve posture? There are many people who deal with lower back pain, wrist pain, and neck pain. Almost everyone, at some point or another has experienced these. Both individuals working at a desk job and those doing physical labor complain of various pain symptoms of the back.

The reason almost always includes bad posture. Good posture is crucial to your health. If your posture is not correct, then you’re going to experience a lot of pain at some point.

As you’re wondering how to improve posture, think about your daily movements. How do you sleep? How do you pick up things off the ground? How is your posture as you sit? How is your reading posture?

7 Ways for Better Posture – Know How to Improve Posture:

Squatting – the right way to squat is to bend your knees. When you pick something up off the ground, bending over puts a lot more stress on your back. The heavier the object, the more likely serious injury can occur. By squatting, you rely on your leg muscles instead of your back.

Sleeping on the side of your body – make it a habit to sleep on the side, instead of your back or stomach. Sleeping on your back can cause back pain. Sleeping on your stomach can cause neck problems.

Back and shoulders back and down – slouching can advanced to a rounded upper back. This puts a lot of stress on your wrists and elbows. Place your shoulders back to help you stay in health.

Heels and weight on them – don’t ever place weight on your toes. This can cause serious pain and injury on your knees. Instead, place your weight on the heels as you walk, sit, and climb stairs. You can curl your toes upward if you have trouble keeping the heels level with the ground.

Keep your head back – if you’re working a lot at a desk, then having the head tilt forward can cause neck pain. Tilt your head back and keep your chin tucked in.

Keep your back straight – two of the most common problems is rounding of the back area and arching. Avoid this. Instead, keep your back and shoulders straight. Shoulders should be back and down.

Be more active – sitting for long periods of time can cause problems with your lower back. You need to move every so often. It’s not easy, especially if you’re working a desk job.

These methods can help you to experience a better posture and help you to know how to improve posture. One of the last points, exercising more is probably one of the most crucial. A lot of people work desk jobs, so it may be difficult to go to the gym several times during the day.

The next best thing is to get up every hour or two, and do some stretching exercises. You can also drink some cool water and take a few moments to move your entire body. The guidelines above should help you to understand how to improve your posture.

To see more options for treating bad posture, read chapter 4 in “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”.

Physical therapy can usually be used to treat postural kyphosis. By using exercises to strengthen the back muscles can help. You are able to correct your posture with simple exercises as well.

In addition, a mild form of anti-inflammatory ointment and mild pain medications can help to alleviate symptoms as well. The curves of kyphosis are not going to worsen with time. There is no need for any surgical intervention.

A combination of physical therapy and mild pain medications can be used to treat Scheuermann’s kyphosis. If the patient is still a growing child, a brace can also be used. Back braces are recommended for any curvature of the spine that is at least forty-five degrees.

The child can continue to wear this brace until adult hood. Your doctor is most likely going to order a number of tests, including x-rays. This will help him or her to keep track of the degree of kyphosis. Braces are usually not recommended for adults.

In extreme cases, surgery may be an option for Scheuermann’s kyphosis. The aim of surgical intervention is to correct the deformities of the spine area. It is also the aim to help in pain relief and in aligning the spine correctly.

Candidates for surgery usually have a curvature greater then seventy-five degrees. They may also have uncontrolled and severe pain. In addition, they may also suffer from pulmonary, cardiac, and neurologic complaints.

There are all kinds of surgical procedures available. They depend on the unique circumstances of each patient’s case. The surgical intervention can be performed from the back, the front or both. Your doctor will decide how this is done.

Your doctor may also obtain x-rays of you bending backward and forward. This helps to see just how flexible your spine is. If your spine is flexible enough, then your doctor may decide on a posterior or frontal approach.

If your spine is not very flexible, then your doctor may decide on a back or anterior method. It does not matter on which method is used; the surgical intervention will give your spine some partial straightening. This is through the use of rods and screws.

These screws and rods are placed in the vertebrae. They will hold your spine in place. This is to cause a fusion of the bones. When treating congenital kyphosis, surgery may be done as early as infancy.

This is due to the fact that this kind of kyphosis is caused by an inborn abnormality. Surgery as early as possible can help to prevent any worsening of this. Osteoporosis can cause a collapse of the vertebrae. This can cause a painful form of kyphosis.

Treatment of this problem is known as kyphoplasty. This is a procedure that uses the insertion of a balloon into the vertebrae. They are then filled with liquid, known as methymethacrylate. This liquid then hardens and helps to have a restoration of the height of the vertebrae.

Knowing how to treat your kyphosis can go a long way to having relief of the pain and discomfort. By correcting your posture, as well as doing the required exercises, you can have improved health. Abnormal Kyphosis does not have to be the end of the world for you.

You can find much more information on treatments for kyphosis in the ebook “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”

Thoracic Kyphosis – The Common Hunch-Back

The natural curvature of the spine area that is called the thoracic spine is kyphosis. Excessive curvature of this can cause problems. Lordosis is the opposite curvature of the spine and this is usually seen in the lumbar and cervical spine.

A certain amount is very natural to the spine. There are also instances where there is excessive kyphosis. Normal kyphosis of the spine is anywhere from 30 degrees to 35 degrees.

With excessive conditions, the kyphosis is going to be more than 35 degrees. It is important to know that the curvature of the thoracic area is going to be greater than 35 degrees when one has a slouched position. This corrects itself once you stand upright.

The Cause of Kyphosis

The condition of having excessive kyphosis can be caused by all kinds of variables. This includes nutritional imbalances during childhood. It can also be caused due to growth plate problems, vitamin D deficiency and bad posture.

Another common cause for thoracic kyphosis is linked to a strong emotional-mental factor. Depression, anxiety, despair, worry, lethargy all can lead to a slouched posture. Often, the kyphosis is able to be corrected by changing one’s posture into an upright one.

Also, the emotions that are the cause need to be addressed. This can be done by meditation and relaxation techniques. It can also be a good idea to visit with a mental health professional, if things are extreme.

Treating Kyphosis

Excessive kyphosis can be treated in a variety of ways. It takes time to correct the posture, though. This includes mobilizations, stretching, exercises, and posture correction on a continued basis. It can take anywhere from four months to an entire year to many any significant advancements.

A Simple Kyphosis Exercise

Have a seat in a comfortable chair and sit at the edge.

Spread your knees apart and place your feet right under the knees.

Tilt your pelvis slightly

With palms facing forward, rotate the arms

Point thumbs backward and separate the fingers

Make sure your head is aligned with the rest of the body

Breathe naturally as you hold the position for several minutes

Repeat every hour throughout the day

Stretches for Kyphosis

It is very important to stretch the muscles that hold your posture. The abdominals and the thoracic flexion muscles both can contribute to extreme kyphosis conditions. By stretching your abdominal muscles you can alleviate a lot of kyphosis conditions.

One of the easiest ways to stretch the abdominals is to lie over one of those huge Swiss balls. It is important to be in a relaxed state as you do this. Then, you just relax and stretch over the ball, breathing deeply and naturally. As you breathe in, you want to stretch as far as possible. Do about fifteen stretches three times a day.

Hopefully, the information here has helped you to understand what kyphosis is and how to treat it. More often, the kyphosis can be treated naturally with simple exercises. You don’t have to worry about painful surgeries or dangerous drugs. The most challenging part in treating kyphosis is to stay consistent and to do the exercises on a daily basis long enough to see the results.

To find out more about the causes of kyphosis, read chapter 2 in the ebook “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”

There are three kinds of abnormal kyphosis. These are:

Scheuermann’s kyphosis,

postural kyphosis,

congenital kyphosis.

Let’s talk about the most common type first.

The most common type of kyphosis is known as postural kyphosis. This kind of kyphosis seems to be very common in girls, more so than in boys. It is usually noticed when children enter the adolescent stage.

The cause of this is due to a very poor posture. It is also caused by the muscles of the spine and back weakening. During postural kyphosis, the vertebrae are shaped in a normal way. This is slow to advance and will not get worse with time.

Often, people with postural kyphosis have muscle fatigue. They may also experience back pain. This condition will not result in a risk of cardiac, neurologic or pulmonary problems.

Scheuermann’s kyphosis will also be detected during the adolescent or teen years. In this condition, the vertebrae are deformed. Scoliosis is often connected with this kyphosis.

X-ray will reveal a wedge of five degrees or more at the front of the spine. At least three vertebral bodies nearby will also show marked degrees. The causes of this are not very well understood.

The least common kind is known as congenital kyphosis. The cause of this is due to the abnormal advancements of the vertebrae. This can happen prior to being born. Several vertebrae grow and fuse together in this condition.

There are other kinds of conditions that lead to kyphosis in adult humans. Osteoporosis is one of the most common types. This is where multiple compression fractures are located in the spine. Still, other causes include ankylosing sodalities and arthritis.

Spine tumors can also be the cause, as well as spine infections. These disorders can result in the front of the vertebrae collapsing. This then causes the advancement of kyphosis.

When to Seek Treatment

In most instances, the kyphosis is caused by bad posture. This rarely will cause any major complications, other than pain and fatigue of the back area. However, if you have any signs or symptoms of this problem, then you should seek the advice of a physician.

Your physician will help you by reviewing your medical history. He or she will ask you when you first started seeing the symptoms. He will ask you if there are any family members who have a history of similar problems, to rule out any congenital abnormalities.

He or she will then perform a physical health examination. An assessment of the curve of your spine will be made, from both a seated and standing position. You will also be tested on your flexibility, reflexes, sensations, and strength.

Based on the physical examination results and your history, the doctor may decide to also order a set of x-rays to be done on the spine. This will help him to rule out more serious forms of kyphosis. If there are any findings of neurologic damage, then an MRI may be required.

As you can see, there are many different kinds of kyphosis. In most cases, you can treat kyphosis yourself with a few simple exercises on a daily basis. Kyphosis doesn’t have to ruin your life, and you can seek relief with daily work outs.

The various types of kyphosis are described in more detail in chapter 1 of the ebook: “Kyphosis and How to Treat It“.
