Kyphosis types
Types of Kyphosis.
There are three main types of kyphosis, each characterised uniquely.
These main types of kyphosis are:
- Postural Kyphosis
- Scheuermann’s kyphosis
- Congenital kyphosis
and are described more fully in “Kyphosis and How to Treat It”, Chapter 1.
Postural kyphosis is the most usual type of kyphosis and normally is not obvious until the early teens. It typically does not get more pronounced as the subject gets older and usually does not lead to other medical problems. It is characterised by a slouching posture caused by weakened muscles and stretched ligaments around the spine. This type of kyphosis does not normally develop progressively or cause other problems apart from some pain and tiredness.
Scheuermann’s kyphosis is a type of kyphosis that also appears in the adolescent years. However this type is caused by abnormal development or deformities in the vertebrae. It is more likely to develop further to symptoms of scoliosis.
Congenital kyphosis is a rare type of kyphosis found typically at birth and usually caused by vertebra not developing normally, or in some cases to fusing together of several vertebrae.
